Asylum seekers can get jobs in social care
The UK government announced that a new category of social care workers is being added to the Health and Care visas and the Shortage Occupation list in December 2021. This change comes into force from February 2022.
The home office then went on to confirm this news, as a temporary measure being put in place for the next 12 months at least. This news has led to fresh job vacancies for care workers, care assistants, home carers, nursing home assistants and many more in the UK health and social care sector. This is good news for asylum seekers and refugees currently waiting for a decision on their applications with the home office.
Further the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) have also emphasised that the home office should allow people to work if they have been waiting for a decision on their asylum application from six months (instead of twelve) in their latest report issued on 15 Dec 2021. As there are more than 33,000 asylum seekers waiting for a decision on their asylum claim in 2020, this news brings new hope for people feeling stuck in the system.
